Department Description
The Tobacco Reduction unit is responsible for co-ordinating the Alberta Tobacco Reduction Strategy (ATRS), and for implementing this strategy through collaboration with a variety of government and community partners. The ATRS aims to reduce disease, disability and death related to tobacco use in Alberta by

  • reducing the number of young people starting to use tobacco
  • encouraging and helping tobacco users to quit
  • reducing exposure to second-hand smoke

The Tobacco Reduction unit provides leadership and co-ordination to the following elements of the ATRS:

  • taxation on tobacco products
  • prevention and education programs
  • cessation support for smokers who want to quit
  • research and evaluation to ensure that the strategy is effective
  • legislation to prevent youth from smoking
