When we communicate we share our feelings, convey information and evoke understanding. We may speak, write, use hand signals or communicate using body language. But no matter how we communicate, to do it effectively we need good communication skills.
How we communicate often says more about ourselves than about the message we’re trying to get across. Communicating our thoughts and our needs clearly, in a way that will be understood, is not always easy. Often, discussions can heat up and become full-blown arguments. Sometimes it can be more effective to listen and let others talk before we try to tell them how we feel.
In fact, if you let others express their point of view, you may often find they’re saying pretty much the same thing that you are. By continuing to communicate rationally, everyone involved can get their needs met—or at least reach a compromise. With a little practice and a lot of patience, you can become a better communicator. It’s not as hard as you may think.
